Meditation-Where is The Mind?
Mixed media acrylic on canvas with acrylic crystals, foil papers, origami paper, mylar, gel paper, glitter, mirrors.
“Knowing others and the world is knowledge;
Knowing yourself is wisdom…
The master knows himself through and through,
And thus understands all things.” Lao Tzu
In meditation we focus intently on how our particular mind works. We observe what thoughts and feelings clamor for the spotlight and what layers of habitual thinking, training and conditioning reveal themselves. We observe where the mind wants to go, despite our valiant efforts to be still. Yet…where is the mind? Can we touch it? Describe it? Know it?
So we simply sit and register the ongoing activity of the mind, and accept what is. As the mind wanders, we use the “leash of remindfulness” (Lama Surya Das), to come back to the breath. Turning within deeply, “it is all within, all that we seek is within.” (Dampa Sangay, the Buddha of Tingry) we can see into the emptiness of mind’s nature, until eventually we can awaken to its fundamental essence; our inherent Buddha nature. Meditation, as Suzuki Roshi said, it is “the Buddha meditating on your seat”.
