The Unending Sea of Blessings
In the Spring of 2019, I was invited by my client, a mindfulness teacher, to collaborate with three other people on a project to capture footage of a creative variation of tea ceremony and dialogue while this painting and a musical score emerged in response to “the unending sea of blessings,” (a Japanese scroll saying). The “dialog” was based on Gregory Kramer Insight Dialogue guidelines – Pause, Relax, Open, Attune to Emergence, Listen Deeply and Speak the Truth.
Traditionally, the scroll is considered the most important tea ceremony implement and sets the theme mood for the event. This painting now presiding in my client's Tea Hut, has taken on the role of setting the mood for her tea ceremonies and mindful practices.
The client offered these thoughts on the commission,
“Lidia's art starts with sensing what would be most beneficial. She attunes to underlying currents - to what is spoken and not spoken, as well as context. She takes seriously the responsibility that goes with the power of the brush. Her paintings are collaborations in many senses of that word. I believe we have enormous power to support each other through authentic caring connection, even (especially) in these dark times. While the formal aesthetic qualities of "The Unending Sea of Blessings" make it beautiful, it is also a portal to what is available to us all. I display that painting during tea and dialogue mindfulness practice in my tea hut in the hopes others will catch something of the light it portrays”.
